Please read these terms carefully before you book. They set out the full car-hire agreement, our insurance and refund policy, and everything included in your camping equipment package. By confirming a booking with 4×4 Self Drive Cars for Hire, you agree to the terms below.

Section One

Car Hire Terms & Conditions

This agreement is between the Owner, 4×4 Self Drive Cars for Hire, and the Hirer, the person or persons signing the Rental Agreement.

Driver Requirements

  • Minimum driver age is 18 years.
  • A valid driver’s license from your country of residence and / or an International Driving Permit is required.
  • The license must be carried at all times while operating the vehicle.
  • Only the Hirer and authorised travel companions listed in the agreement may drive.

Payment Terms

  • A booking deposit of 40% of the total rental cost confirms your booking.
  • The remaining balance of 60% is due at least 14 days before the rental start date.
  • A refundable security deposit of USD 500 is held and returned after satisfactory inspection.
  • Payment is accepted in USD or Euros by credit card or bank transfer; all transfer fees are the Hirer’s responsibility.
  • Payment is due in full at the beginning of the rental unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Fuel Policy

  • No fuel is supplied with the rental.
  • If the vehicle is delivered with fuel, return it with the same fuel level to avoid refuelling charges.
  • Fuel must be purchased only from reputable stations (Shell, Total, or Rubis).
  • Liability for damage caused by contaminated fuel falls on the Hirer.

Speed Limits & Restrictions

  • Highways: 80 km/h maximum.
  • Towns and built-up areas: 50 km/h.
  • National parks: 30 to 40 km/h.
  • GPS trackers monitor compliance; violations may void insurance cover.

Border Crossing

  • Crossing borders requires written approval and a valid COMESA Yellow Card insurance.
  • Unauthorised crossings are a breach of contract and result in forfeiture of the security deposit.

Mechanical Breakdown

  • A replacement vehicle is provided at no cost if repairs exceed 24 hours, subject to availability.
  • Rescue services respond within 1 to 20 hours.
  • Refunds apply only if the delay exceeds 10 hours in a single day.

Section Two

Insurance & Refund Policy

Every rental includes comprehensive insurance. The cover is made up of three parts, with a small number of important exclusions.

Third-Party Liability

Covers death, bodily harm, or property damage caused by the insured vehicle to others on the road.

Comprehensive Cover

Protects against damage caused by animals, falling objects, natural disasters, theft, vandalism, and fire.

Collision Damage Waiver

Covers most damage caused by the driver’s negligence, such as collisions with other vehicles, objects, or rollovers.

Important Exclusions

  • The CDW excludes damage from driving under the influence.
  • It excludes unauthorised off-roading.
  • It excludes damage from neglecting safety precautions.
  • Renters must also carry individual travel insurance.

Excess Damage Deposit

A USD 1000 refundable deposit is held as an excess damage guarantee.

  • Typical damage responsibility is less than USD 1000, and the deposit is refunded when the vehicle is returned safely.
  • For extensive damage exceeding USD 1,000 in repairs, the renter is liable for approximately 50% of the total assessed damage.
  • Most rentals end with a full deposit refund; only severe damage leads to higher liability sharing.

Your Camping Equipment

Every self-drive vehicle can be fully kitted for the bush. Here is exactly what comes in the standard camping package.

Tent & Sleeping

  • Roof-top tent
  • Sleeping bags
  • Camping chairs and camping table
  • Camping light

Cooking Equipment

  • Portable stove or gas cooker
  • Cooking pots and pans
  • Cooking utensils (spatula, ladle, tongs)
  • Plates, bowls, and cutlery
  • Cups
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Car fridge
  • Dishwashing bucket and jerrycan
  • Towels

Optional Add-ons

  • Camper Awning: USD 5 per day
  • Pillows: USD 10 for the entire trip

Good to know: this camping gear covers two people. If you are travelling as a larger group, you can request extra camping equipment for a small fee.
